Glimmers of Hope: A Perspective from the Classroom

Courtney Price Dukes,

Student Advocate &

Emerging Voices Member

"In the systems our youth are navigating, everything is in flux…I stay because these kids deserve a constant.”

At Juniper Arts Academy, we often talk about "the work" in terms of curriculum, instruments, and art supplies. But the true infrastructure of our mission is built on something much more human: consistency.

Courtney Price-Dukes, a dedicated Student Advocate, has spent the last three years navigating this mission alongside us. Whether she is assisting in our Clubs Program at the Wichita Children’s Home or supporting the harmonies of our Emerging Voices Choir, Courtney has become a fixture in the lives of our students.

Recently, we asked Courtney to share her written reflections on why she continues to show up, and her words provide a profound look at the "why" behind the Juniper model.

The Architecture of Trust

In a world that often feels unpredictable for youth in the foster care and juvenile justice systems, the simple act of showing up is a radical one. Courtney describes the classroom not just as a place for art, but as a rare constant in an ever-changing landscape.

"In the systems our youth are navigating, everything is in flux," Courtney writes. "Case workers change, placements change, schools change. I stay because these kids deserve a constant. They deserve to walk into a room and see a familiar face that expects nothing from them other than their authentic selves. Consistency is the foundation of trust."

This consistency is what allows a student to move from a state of "high alert" to a state of creativity. When the environment is predictable, the brain can finally rest.

Finding the "New Sound"

For many of our students, the daily experience of life is loud—not just in volume, but in the mental weight of navigating complex systems. Courtney’s reflections highlight how the specific nature of our Music and Art Clubs provides a necessary "mute button" for that external chaos.

"Foster care is full of chaos. It’s loud, it’s unpredictable, and it’s often overwhelming," she shares. "Juniper provides a temporary release from that noise—a new sound, if you will. When a student is focused on the rhythm of a weaving loom or the vibration of a guitar string, the 'noise' of their situation fades into the background. It allows them to just be."

The Result: Glimmers in the Dark

We see the results of this "release" every week. We see it when a student masters their first riff in Guitar Club, or when they finally finish a complex tapestry in Art Club. These aren't just artistic milestones; they are evidence of a nervous system finding its balance.

Courtney summarizes the mission of JAA with a phrase that has become a North Star for our team:

"Juniper Arts Academy allows youth to see that there can be glimmers of hope in moments that feel swallowed by darkness."

As we move into our new home at Payne Elementary and prepare for our Summer Studio, we carry Courtney’s words with us. We aren't just teaching chords and knots; we are providing the "steady presence" that allows hope to take root.
